USD 294 School Board Reviews Key Grants, Staffing Changes, and Transportation Updates

by Derek White

The Oberlin USD 294 Board of Education held its regular meeting on March 10, 2025, with significant discussions and decisions centered on school funding, staffing, and transportation upgrades.

President Zach May called the meeting to order with five board members present and two absent. The board began by approving the agenda, which included additions related to legal services and scholarship endowments.

Personnel and Staffing Updates

The board approved multiple staffing changes, including the hiring of Jayce Dempewolf and Kenneth Erickson for summer help positions, and Carol Brown as the new Spanish teacher. Several resignations were also accepted, including High School Principal Jeremy Holloway, School Nurse Melanie Purvis, and other faculty members.

Financial and Grant Approvals

Members reviewed and approved financial reports and expenditures, followed by several key grant-related actions:

·       Approval of the KSDE audit findings.

·       Acceptance of funds from the Kansas Preschool Pilot (KPP) Grant for the 2025-26 school year.

·       Approval of a technology grant submitted via Grants.gov by the district’s IT department.

Facilities and Equipment

The board authorized multiple transportation purchases, including a used 20-passenger route bus and a new transit van from the Olathe Fleet. Policy changes related to handicap transportation were also approved.

Legislative and Budget Decisions

In preparation for the next school year, the board voted to adopt the statewide average of 33% for the Local Option Budget (LOB) percentage. Additionally, they approved participation in KASB legal services, selecting Option 1 for both assistance and membership dues.

Endowment Fund and KSHSAA Representation

The board agreed to transfer over $11,000 into the district’s scholarship fund and voted for Kyle D. as the district’s representative for the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA).

Executive Sessions and Administrative Reports

Two executive sessions were held—one regarding contract negotiations and the other concerning personnel matters—though no action was taken following either. Principals Jeremy Holloway and Kricket Ketterl shared updates on building-level activities and upcoming events. Superintendent Dr. Joel Applegate also informed the board about a recent meeting concerning the Kansas Historical Tax Credit.

The board adjourned at the conclusion of a productive session focused on maintaining operational strength, supporting students and staff, and preparing for the upcoming school year.
