Veleda J. Steinle
Apr 25, 1931 — Aug 16, 2026
Veleda Joy Steinle, 93, of Colby, died Sunday, August 16, 2026. She was born in Osborne County Kansas at her Grandma Petry’s house on April 25, 1931, to William E. Haskell and Beulah E. Petry. Veleda was the third child out of seven. In 1935, the family packed up and moved to Arkansas due to the dust bowl going on in Kansas. She attended a country school called Eagle Corner until 7th grade. The family then moved again to Rogers, Arkansas. She graduated from Rogers High School in 1949 with top honors.
In 1952, Velda met Ivan Steinle who was waiting to be discharged from the Army. After a short courtship they were married on December 12, 1952, at the Nazarene Church in Rogers. On December 27, 1952, they returned to the Steinle farmstead in Mingo. There she became an excellent farm wife, cooking three meals a day, pulling calves, tended her garden, raised chickens and collected eggs. Three years later on October 13, 1955, Rylinda Kay was born in Colby.
Ivan and Veleda worked together to raise many crops of wheat, corn and milo as well as cattle. Veleda was a community leader in 4-H for 8 years and belonged to a home economics unit for 65 years. After 54 years of marriage Ivan passed away in 2006. Veleda lived north of Colby for 17 years before making the decision to move to Fairview Estates in Colby.
Veleda, also known to many as Granny was a spitfire. She had her “marbles” all the way to the end. Her mind was a steel trap where he could relay back all sorts of information about the farm. She was one of the strongest willed people you would ever meet.
Veleda was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and one sister.
She is survived by her daughter Rylinda Barnett (Charles), of Colby; grandchildren, Kristy Karnes (Michael), of Colby, Brian Barnett, of Nashville, and two great grandchildren, Brielle and Brandon Karnes.
The family wants to include some special thank-you’s: Bud Murphy, Denise Murphy, Jeffrey Becker, Dr. Darren Matchell, Linda Porter and the entire medical staff at Citizens Health. You all became like family to her. We can’t say thank you enough for all the time, love and care you showed to Granny.
Visitation is 5-7:00 pm Thursday, August 20, 2026, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby. The Funereal Service will take place at 10:00 am Friday, August 21, 2025, also at the mortuary, with burial in Beulah Cemetery, Colby. Memorials may be made to the Thomas County Community Foundation and mailed in care of Baalmann Mortuary, PO Box 391, Colby, KS 67701. For information or condolences visit baalmannmortuary.com
