The Sherman Theater is turning 100, and we’re kicking off a full year of celebration starting Sunday, August 10! It’s hard to believe the theater has been a part of Sherman County’s history for an entire century, and now it’s time to honor that legacy with a series of events, classic films, community tours, and heartfelt nostalgia.
The Centennial Series Begins: August 10
The celebration begins with the first film in our Centennial Movie Series — the Western classic Shane — showing Sunday, August 10 at 1:30 PM. This series will feature a free Sunday matinee every month, thanks to the generosity of local sponsors throughout the community.
After each movie, guests are invited to stay for a reception and tour of the historic theater, where tour guides will share stories and behind-the-scenes details of the theater’s long and colorful history.
This isn’t just a movie series — it’s a walk down memory lane and a chance to connect with others who love this local treasure as much as you do.
Sponsored by the Community, For the Community
This celebration wouldn't be possible without the support of our generous local sponsors. We'd like to give a heartfelt shoutout to the following:
Sherman County Community Development (sponsoring the first event!)
Schilling Cattle
Artzer Accounting
Western State Bank
Kiwanis
L & W Insurance
Garrett Liquor
Lutheran Church
Harrison Family
Insurance Agency
Goodland Games
Wheat Ridge Farms
McClure Plumbing and Heating
Thanks to these businesses and organizations, every single movie in the series is completely free for the public to enjoy!
Save the Date: Grand Finale in August 2026
The yearlong celebration will wrap up on August 2, 2026, with a very special screening of the silent film Tramp, Tramp, Tramp. This final event will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony with local ambassadors and promises to be the perfect way to close out this monumental centennial year.
Honoring the People Behind the Curtain
It’s not just the building we’re celebrating — it’s the people. Past employees like Lonnie Pfeiffer, Mark Shepner, Verla Terry, Marianne Harold, and Virginia Palmer (who’s still helping out today!) are all part of the theater’s rich history. Looking back through those old employee forms reminds us just how many lives this place has touched.
