Colby Shuts Out Nickerson to Close Season

COLBY - The Colby Eagles closed out their regular season on a high note, snapping a seven-game losing streak with a 26-0 shutout victory over Nickerson at Dennen Field.
After entering the matchup at 1-7, Colby put together one of its most complete performances of the season, holding the Panthers to just 128 total yards and forcing four turnovers. The Eagles finished with 288 yards of offense, including 150 on the ground, to secure the victory.
Colby wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. On the Eagles’ opening possession, quarterback Neale Morrison connected with Nathan Cates on a slant route for a 46-yard touchdown. The three-play, 54-yard drive gave Colby an early 6-0 advantage.
The Eagles’ defense responded by stopping Nickerson on fourth down on its opening possession. After both teams traded three-and-outs, Colby put together an 11-play drive that reached the Nickerson 19-yard line before turning the ball over on downs.
Nickerson threatened again in the second quarter, using a 24-yard scramble from quarterback Rylan Morrell to move the chains. However, the Panthers were unable to convert another fourth-down attempt as Colby came up with a sack to get the ball back.
Morrison later broke loose for a 22-yard run to put the Eagles in scoring position, but his next pass was intercepted by Chase Welch at the Nickerson 4-yard line.
The Colby defense forced another three-and-out, and Julian Salcido appeared to give the Eagles another touchdown with a punt return. A penalty brought the return back, but Colby still capitalized on the possession. Morrison found Jensen Barnett for a 9-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 12-0.
The score remained that way through halftime.
Nickerson opened the second half with another three-and-out, but Colby gave the ball right back when Josten Sabatka fumbled on the first play of the Eagles’ possession. The Panthers recovered, only to be stopped on fourth-and-1 in their own territory.
After Colby missed a 30-yard field goal, Nickerson found some momentum with a 36-yard completion to Welch. However, Ethan Fabrizius ended the drive with an interception. Fabrizius came up with another takeaway on the next Nickerson possession, intercepting Morrell again.
Colby turned that opportunity into points, putting together an eight-play, 76-yard drive capped by a 3-yard touchdown run from offensive lineman Connor Surmeier. The Eagles led 18-0 entering the fourth quarter.
Fabrizius’ second interception was followed by another Nickerson turnover when Morrell threw his third interception of the night. Salcido made the play, returning the ball to the Nickerson 7-yard line. He was rewarded on the next snap, scoring on a 7-yard run to push the lead to 26-0.
The Eagles’ defense finished the job in the closing minutes, with McCager Wright recording a game-sealing sack on Nickerson’s final possession to force a turnover on downs.
Morrison finished 11-of-23 passing for 138 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also led Colby on the ground with 66 yards on 10 carries. Cates caught four passes for 69 yards and a touchdown.
For Nickerson, Morrell completed 7 of 13 passes for 123 yards and three interceptions while rushing for 25 yards. Welch led the Panthers with three receptions for 92 yards.
Colby finished the night 3-of-11 on third down and 3-of-6 on fourth down. The shutout victory gave the Eagles a positive finish to a season in which they had already seen their playoff hopes come to an end.
