The Colby Varsity Eagles delivered a night of unforgettable softball action on Friday, pulling off a dramatic 11-10 walk-off victory over Lakin in game one, followed by a high-scoring 13-12 triumph in game two. Both games were filled with standout performances, clutch plays, and resilience that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
The opening game of the doubleheader saw the Colby Eagles emerge victorious in a nail-biting 11-10 finish. The tension peaked in the bottom of the ninth inning when Jalyssa Sabatka sealed the win with a clutch single, scoring the decisive run.
Sadie Cheney was the offensive powerhouse for the Eagles, driving in four runs and going 4-for-5 at the plate. Cheney made an early impact in the first inning, tripling to bring home three runs, while Madison Hull drew a walk to push across another run, giving Colby an early lead.
The Eagles extended their advantage in the second inning when Ryler Carter doubled down the left-field line and an error by Lakin allowed additional runs to score. However, Lakin responded fiercely, taking a 9-8 lead in the seventh inning.
Maddie McCarty came through in the clutch in the bottom of the seventh, tying the game at 9 with a single. Lakin briefly regained the lead in the eighth after a sacrifice bunt, but the Eagles responded again, thanks to a double by Briley Kleinsorge that tied the game at 10.
Carter secured the win on the mound for Colby, striking out 13 batters over nine innings while allowing 10 runs (five earned) on six hits. The Eagles' offense tallied 14 hits, with Sabatka, Carter, and Kleinsorge each collecting multiple hits. McCarty also contributed with three walks and an impressive four stolen bases.
The second game of the night proved to be just as exciting, with Colby edging Lakin 13-12 in a battle of offensive firepower. The Eagles racked up 18 hits, while Lakin recorded 13, showcasing both teams' aggressive hitting approach.
Sadie Cheney once again shined at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and two singles. The Eagles wasted no time in setting the tone, scoring three runs in the first inning. Sabatka tripled, Cheney singled, and a passed ball allowed runs to cross the plate.
Colby extended their lead in the second inning after Kenlie Miller's single and Sabatka’s double each drove in a run. However, Lakin mounted a furious comeback in the fifth, scoring five runs on a mix of hits and walks. Lakin then tied the game in the seventh with a late surge, setting up another intense finish.
Karli Hills earned the win for Colby, allowing 12 runs (five earned) on 13 hits while striking out eight. Cheney and Kleinsorge combined for eight hits, and the Eagles were aggressive on the base paths, swiping five bases.
With these thrilling victories, the Colby Eagles now set their sights on their next matchup against Goodland on Tuesday. Fans can expect another electrifying showdown as the Eagles aim to continue their winning momentum.
