When an EF3 tornado tore through Grinnell, Kansas, on May 18, 2025, it left destruction in its wake—damaging homes, schools, and even the local cemetery. Among the many beloved landmarks impacted was the Cow Paddy Golf Club, a cherished nine-hole course nestled on the north edge of town. But while the tornado may have toppled flags and twisted fairways, it couldn’t shake the spirit of Grinnell.
More than just a golf course, Cow Paddy has long stood as a symbol of perseverance and community pride for western Kansas. Born from a humble pasture, the course was painstakingly built by a group of local men and women who envisioned more than just a place to play—they envisioned a legacy. Using old farm equipment, repurposed materials, and thousands of donated hours, the course became a labor of love and a gathering point for families, fundraisers, and laughter-filled evenings.

Over the years, it has grown—not from funding, but from friendships and grassroots passion. Local youth fundraisers, high school shop class contributions, and swing-for-a-cause tournaments have kept the Cow Paddy vibrant and meaningful.
Now, after the tornado, that spirit is being tested. The damage is heartbreaking. Trees, benches, signs, and shelters are battered, some beyond repair. But the Grinnell community has once again stepped up, refusing to let tragedy define them. A rebuilding effort is underway, powered by the same love and determination that built Cow Paddy in the first place.
Donations are being accepted to restore what was lost and to ensure that Cow Paddy Golf Club remains not just a place to play—but a monument to what a tight-knit community can do when it builds with love.
