Today, at approx. 10:30 am Cheylin High School, in Bird City, received a phone call stating a gunman was on their way to the school. Cheylin school officials notified local law enforcement and activated the school crisis emergency plans. The school was immediately locked down and secured in coordination with local law enforcement and emergency response agencies out of an abundance of caution as all threats are taken seriously.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued Do Not Drink Order for Qwik Fuel, LLC. public water supply system located in Thomas County. This advisory was issued because of a failure of disinfection equipment and elevated nitrates in the PWS water.

On April 29. 2026, at approximately 2:27 pm (mountain time), an unidentified individual contacted the Walmart in Goodland and reported multiple pipe bombs inside the store, threatening to detonate them.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) arrested a Cheyenne County emergency dispatcher following an investigation into the physical abuse of children.

Governor Laura Kelly announced she has signed Senate Bill 82, which expands access to tax credits for employer expenses for child care and contributions to third parties that expand the availability of community child care. The bill also creates income tax credits for the sale of higher-ethanol blends of fuels and the purchase of lockable gun and ammunition storage.

In the early morning hours on Monday, April 27, a man rolled a tractor in Thomas County, leaving him with minor injuries.

The Goodland USD 352 North Elementary School has announced that the last day of the After School Program for this year will be Tuesday, May 5th.
