Eagles on the Move! Postseason Action, Track Progress and Big Tournaments Ahead

It's a busy time for Colby Eagles athletics! With fall sports wrapping up, postseason competition getting underway and major improvements happening at Dennen Field, there's plenty of excitement surrounding Colby Public Schools.

USD 315 Activities Director Travis Betz stopped by the NWKS Radio studios to visit with Joel Navarro about the latest happenings in Colby athletics and what's coming up as the district prepares for winter sports.

Eagles Athletes Head Into Postseason Competition

Fall sports are quickly approaching the finish line, and several Colby teams are getting ready for postseason action.

The Colby High School girls tennis team recently completed its season at regionals, while the girls golf team competed at sub-state in Cimarron.

One of the highlights from the golf competition was Cora DeGood qualifying for the state tournament in Wichita!

Betz said the girls golf team had an outstanding season and came very close to qualifying for state as a team.

Meanwhile, the Colby Eagles football team is preparing for a road trip to Ulysses this week.

The volleyball team recently wrapped up regular-season competition, splitting matches against Quinter and Oberlin. The Lady Eagles will travel to Beloit on Monday for a regional quadrangular, where the top two teams will advance to sub-state.

Cross-country athletes are also preparing for their final competitions, with league championships followed by postseason competition at Norton.

With so many teams competing across the region, it's certainly a busy time for Colby athletes, coaches and families!

Big Changes Happening at Dennen Field

If you haven't driven by Dennen Field lately, you might be surprised by what you see.

Construction on the new track is underway, and while things may look a little messy right now, Betz says that's a good sign.

"They're getting a lot done right now," Betz said, adding that favorable weather has helped crews make progress.

The improvements will benefit Colby students and athletes, but the project could also have a much bigger impact on the community.

A new track creates opportunities to bring larger sporting events to Colby, including the possibility of hosting regional track meets in the future.

Betz pointed out that smaller schools have used the facility in the past, and bringing more schools and communities to Colby provides benefits that extend beyond the athletic competition.

"Anytime we have that many teams and communities come to town, it's just really beneficial for Colby," Betz said.

Those events also bring families, coaches and fans into town, creating additional opportunities for local restaurants, hotels and businesses.

Big Tournaments Coming to Colby

While fall sports are wrapping up, winter athletics will be here before we know it, and Colby is preparing to welcome teams from across the region and beyond.

Betz highlighted two major events coming to the Colby Event Center.

The annual Eagle Invitational Wrestling Tournament will bring numerous schools and wrestling teams to town for a weekend of competition.

Then, in January, the 42nd annual Orange and Black Basketball Tournament will once again welcome teams from multiple states to Colby.

Both tournaments are longtime traditions and showcase Colby's ability to host major athletic events.

With facilities like the Colby Event Center and improvements underway at Dennen Field, the community continues to strengthen its reputation as a destination for regional sporting events.

A Busy Season for Colby Athletics

Although November may provide a brief break in the high school athletic schedule, middle school sports will continue, and the winter season will quickly bring basketball and wrestling into full swing.

For Betz and the Colby Eagles, there is always another game, tournament or event just around the corner.

NWKS Radio will continue following Colby Eagles athletics throughout the school year, including live coverage of Colby Eagles football on 100.3 The Ride and online at nwksradio.net.

Go Eagles!
