On February 26, the Colby Event Center was buzzing with excitement as local businesses and professionals gathered for the 7th Grade Career Fair, an event designed to introduce students to a wide variety of career paths available in Northwest Kansas. Kristina from NWKS Radio sat down with Karen Sullivan, Licensed Master Social Worker with Colby Public Schools and a member of the Colby Middle School IPS (Individual Plan of Study) Team, to discuss the impact of this annual event.
A Day of Discovery
“The goal isn’t for students to decide their entire future today,” Sullivan explained. “It’s about exposure—learning what’s out there beyond the careers they see at home. It’s a chance to explore industries they may have never considered before.”
Now in its fourth year, the event has grown significantly, and this year’s fair was the biggest yet. With 25 businesses on site, students had the chance to interact with professionals from a diverse range of fields.

Careers That Spark Interest
This year’s lineup featured careers in radio broadcasting, healthcare, counseling, law enforcement (including highway patrol and arson investigation), court reporting, and more. Every business and professional volunteered their time to inspire the next generation.
For many students, the event was an eye-opener. While some may have initially been skeptical, Sullivan noted that enthusiasm quickly took over. “Some students drag their feet at first, unsure if this will be fun. But once they start exploring, you see their excitement build. They’re running from booth to booth, eager to learn more.”
Community Support Makes It Possible
The Career Fair is a true community effort, made possible by the generosity of local businesses and professionals who dedicate their time to engaging with students. Their willingness to invest in the future workforce of Northwest Kansas is a testament to the strength and support within the region.
Looking Ahead

Events like the 7th Grade Career Fair play a crucial role in broadening students' horizons and helping them consider future possibilities. Whether they discover a new passion or simply gain a better understanding of career opportunities, every student leaves with valuable insights.
As the event continues to grow, so does its impact—helping young minds dream big and plan for the future.
