Northwest Kansas is mourning the loss of Skyler Norman, age 70, of Gem, Kansas, who tragically passed away after being struck by a semi-truck at the Sapp Bros. Travel Center in Fremont, Nebraska, on Thursday evening, September 4, 2025.
What Happened
Authorities say the incident occurred around 6:42 p.m. near the fuel island of the travel center on North Broad Street. Norman was walking in the area when he was hit by a Mack semi-truck. He was transported to Methodist Fremont Health, where he later died from his injuries.
The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office and Nebraska State Patrol, with assistance from Fremont Fire and Rural Fire, are continuing to investigate the accident.
Safety Reminders
Experts note that visibility is one of the biggest challenges for both truck drivers and pedestrians in areas like fuel stations. Large commercial trucks can measure more than 70 feet in length and 13 feet tall, leaving significant blind spots. Instructors remind the public that “if you can’t see the driver, they can’t see you.”
This tragedy underscores the importance of extra caution in shared spaces where trucks and pedestrians move side by side.
Community Impact
Skyler Norman was well known in Gem and throughout Northwest Kansas, and news of his passing has brought sadness across the region. His death is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly everyday situations can turn tragic.
On behalf of everyone at NWKS Radio, our thoughts and prayers are with the Norman family during this incredibly difficult time.
Baalman Mortuary is handling the funeral arrangements.
