I had the pleasure of speaking with Brent Kaiser from Special Olympics about an exciting event happening this weekend—the Special Olympics Truck Convoy. If you're a fan of trucks, community events, and supporting a great cause, this is an event you won’t want to miss!
A Legacy of Giving
The Special Olympics Truck Convoy has been a cherished tradition for several years now. It all started with Joe Mentlick, a familiar name to many in town, who launched the convoy in Colby. What began as a simple fundraiser has grown into a significant event that attracts participants from across the state.
Originally centered around semi-trucks, the convoy has evolved to welcome a diverse range of vehicles, including motorcycles, cars, and even classic cars. This inclusivity makes the event accessible and fun for everyone.
Event Details
The convoy kicks off on Saturday, September 7, starting from Oakley and Goodland. Participants can meet at Mittens in Oakley or Shorten Sons in Goodland before heading out on Interstate 70 to Colby. Once in Colby, the celebration continues at the Petro Oasis Travel Center.
Here’s what to expect when you arrive:
- Music and Entertainment: Enjoy tunes from a live DJ.
- Games and Fun: Participate in cornhole and other activities.
- Dinner and Auction: A chance to bid on exciting items and enjoy a meal.
- Parade: The festivities culminate in a parade through Colby starting at 6:45 PM.
Everyone is welcome to join and cheer on the convoy.
Why It Matters
For Special Olympics participants, the convoy is about more than just fundraising. It's a crucial opportunity to raise awareness about their programs and athletes. As Brent shared, driving through Colby and along the interstate with vehicles adorned with Special Olympics messages helps shine a light on their mission and the incredible work they do.
How You Can Get Involved
There are several ways you can support the event:
- Donate Auction Items: If you have items to contribute, they’re always welcome.
- Join the Convoy: Registration starts at 3 PM at Mittens or Short & Sons. Bring your vehicle and join the fun!
- Attend the Celebration: Even if you're not driving, come out to Colby to enjoy the music, food, and community spirit.
If you have any questions or want to get involved, don't hesitate to reach out. Here’s to a successful Truck Convoy and a big boost for Special Olympics!
