GOODLAND, Kan. — A bright October morning and plenty of pink filled the air as Goodland Regional Medical Center (GRMC) hosted its annual 5K Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness on Saturday, October 18. The weather cooperated, the wind stayed calm, and spirits were high as community members came together to celebrate survivors, honor loved ones, and raise funds for women’s health services.
“It was just a really nice event,” said Lucretia Stargell, MBA, FACHE, CPS, GRMC Chief Executive Officer. “We were thankful that the wind held off until the end, and we had about 30 people — mostly walkers — come out for a great day.”
The morning began with a united first lap around the track featuring breast cancer survivors, followed by the option to continue walking locally marked routes through town. Participants enjoyed a relaxed, community atmosphere as they waved to neighbors, pets, and cheering onlookers along the way.
“All the proceeds raised are going to our radiology department to help further enhance our cancer screenings — mainly mammograms,” Stargell shared. “We’re proud to offer a full line of women’s health services that support care at every stage of life.”
The event was organized by Jennifer Miller and her team, working closely with Kirsten Bowen, Director of Radiology and Women’s Services at GRMC. Lindsey Cling planned the 5K route, and members of the Goodland High School Cross Country team helped post signs and set up for the event.
Stargell also joined the walk herself — alongside her dog Reese — enjoying both the exercise and the camaraderie. “It was such a fun day,” she said. “We’re so thankful to everyone who helped make it happen.”
The 5K served not only as a fundraiser but as a reminder of the importance of early detection and regular screenings. By supporting GRMC’s radiology department, the event helps ensure that lifesaving diagnostic services remain available locally for women across Northwest Kansas.
“It’s wonderful to honor those who have battled breast cancer,” Stargell added. “And it’s just as important to keep shining a light on prevention and care — right here at home.”
