Happy Kansas Day 🌻
(Or as we like to say… it’s our birthday, so yes, we’re celebrating.)
Every year on January 29, Kansans pause—some proudly, some quietly, some while driving I-70 in a crosswind—to celebrate Kansas Day, the anniversary of Kansas becoming the 34th state in 1861.
It’s not just a date on the calendar. Kansas Day is all about state pride, history, community, and a whole lot of sunflower-level love.
Fast, Fun Kansas Facts 🌾
Because no Kansas Day is complete without a few brag-worthy facts:
🌻 Kansas produces more wheat than almost any other state—hence the nickname The Wheat State
🐄 There are more cattle than people in Kansas (and honestly, that tracks)
🌪️ Kansas sits right in the heart of Tornado Alley, but we just call that “spring”
🛣️ The geographic center of the lower 48 states is right here in Kansas
🦖 Kansas once had oceans, sharks, and dinosaurs—which explains a lot
🌅 Kansas sunsets are unofficially undefeated

What Makes Kansas… Kansas
Kansas isn’t flashy. It doesn’t try to be. And that’s kind of the point.
Kansas is:
Small towns where everyone waves (even if they don’t know you)
Friday nights under stadium lights 🏈
County fairs, 4-H barns, and livestock shows
Gravel roads, grain bins, windmills, and open skies
Neighbors who show up—no questions asked
It’s a state built on hard work, resilience, and community, and that pride runs deep.
How We Celebrate Kansas Day 🎉
Kansas Day is especially popular in schools and communities, and celebrations can look a little different everywhere—but usually include:
📚 Learning Kansas history and state symbols
🧑🌾 Classroom activities about farming, weather, and pioneers
🎨 Kansas-themed art, coloring pages, and projects
🍪 Kansas-shaped cookies (this is very important)
🏛️ Virtual or in-person tours of the Kansas State Capitol
🗣️ Sharing local stories, traditions, and hometown pride
And for adults? It’s a perfect excuse to wear your Kansas gear, share state facts, support local businesses, and remind yourself why you call this place home.

Why Kansas Day Still Matters
Kansas Day isn’t just about history—it’s about who we are now.
It’s about celebrating:
The people who keep communities strong
The educators passing on state pride
The farmers, ranchers, small businesses, and volunteers
And the simple fact that Kansas feels like home
From All of Us At NWKS Radio…
