Icy Roads Lead to Rollover Accident on K-383 — First Real Sign of Winter in NWKS

Winter made its presence known in Northwest Kansas Saturday morning as icy conditions contributed to a rollover crash north of Norton. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol crash log, the accident happened on November 29, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. on K-383, about 2.7 miles north of U.S. 36.

Troopers say a northbound 2024 Ford Expedition hit a patch of ice, causing the rear end to break loose on the slick roadway. The driver, 53-year-old Colleen M. Storm of David City, Nebraska, lost control as the vehicle spun, slid into the north ditch, rolled, and came to rest upright facing southwest.

The Expedition carried five occupants, all from Nebraska. Four were reported with no apparent injuries thanks to seat belts, but an 11-year-old passenger, Jacob Storm, suffered a suspected minor injury. He was transported to Norton County Hospital. Kansas Highway Patrol noted Jacob was not wearing a safety restraint at the time of the crash.

The other passengers included:

  • Sarah Storm, 16 — no injuries, restrained

  • Elizabeth Storm, 14 — no injuries, restrained

  • Luke Storm, 17 — no injuries, not restrained

Saturday’s crash serves as an early reminder that winter weather has arrived in Northwest Kansas, and road conditions can change quickly. Even small amounts of ice can cause vehicles to lose traction, especially on rural highways where wind and cold temperatures create slick patches without warning.

As we move into the winter season, motorists are urged to slow down, buckle up, and use extra caution—especially during the first few rounds of freezing weather when drivers are still adjusting.
