New Track, Student Programs and More Happening at USD 315

Colby Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Kevin Werner stopped by the NWKS Radio studios this week with plenty of updates from USD 315, including opportunities for students and parents, staffing needs and some visible changes that will soon be taking place at the track.

After-School Program Back Up and Running

One of the biggest updates is the return of the district’s after-school program, which started after Labor Day and is now a few weeks into the school year.

The program is designed to provide students with both additional academic support and enrichment opportunities.

“If you're a parent out there that wants your student to get some intense intervention and some enrichment, please reach out,” Werner said.

Students who may be struggling in a particular area can receive extra attention on specific skills, while enrichment activities give students a chance to put what they are learning into action. Werner said activities can include projects such as rockets or spaghetti towers that incorporate subjects like math and physics.

There are still openings for students in the program, and USD 315 is also looking for additional staff members to help. Families interested in enrolling a student can contact Colby Grade School Principal Mrs. Zeigelmeier, while those interested in working with the program can contact Mr. Hawks at the district administration office.

Werner said district officials are also discussing the possibility of expanding the program as interest grows.

New Tool Gives Parents a Closer Look at School

Werner also highlighted “How’s School Going,” a platform being used by Colby Public Schools to help families stay connected with what is happening in the classroom.

Parents and guardians receive weekly emails with school newsletters and information about upcoming activities, but the program goes beyond just keeping track of events.

Families can also see how their student is doing academically, review assessments,

check assignments and look at attendance information. Recent FastBridge screening results for math and reading are also available, giving parents a look at where their child stands early in the school year.

Werner said he likes that the information can also help identify trends that may otherwise be difficult to see.

The district continues to use PowerSchool as well, allowing parents to monitor grades, assignments, lunch balances and fees.

Werner encouraged families to use both resources to stay connected with their student’s education.

USD 315 Looking for Paraprofessionals and Substitute Teachers

Like many school districts, Colby Public Schools continues to look for people willing to step into important support roles.

Werner said the Northwest Kansas Educational Service Center is looking for paraprofessionals for special education, including several openings in Colby.

The district is also looking for substitute teachers.

“We will take as many subs as we can get,” Werner said, noting that substitute teaching can be a good way to earn some extra income while helping the school district when additional classroom coverage is needed.

Those who have never worked in education shouldn't necessarily count themselves out. Werner said the first step for someone interested in substitute teaching is to visit the Colby Public Schools website and apply. The district can then help applicants through the process, including interviews, training modules and resources to prepare them for their first day in the classroom.

Track Construction About to Get Underway

Perhaps the most visible change coming to USD 315 is at the track.

Werner said McConnell & Associates and Integrity Sports were scheduled to be in Colby for a pre-construction meeting, with demolition of the existing track expected to begin soon.

“It’s going to get a little ugly out there,” Werner joked, but the temporary mess will lead to a major improvement for the district and community.

The finished facility is expected to include a new eight-lane track that can serve Colby students, Colby Community College and people throughout the surrounding area.

The upgraded facility could also create additional opportunities for Colby to host larger track meets and postseason events in the future.

Now, Werner said, they just need Mother Nature to cooperate while the work gets underway.
