Colby Community College volleyball improved to 7-and-3 overall and 2-and-0 in conference play with a three-set sweep of Garden City Saturday. The Trojans won 25-21, 25-23 and 25-11, led by Ella Dridi with 16 kills and Marta Cherubini with 10. Colby is back home Wednesday for an early KJCCC showdown with Barton at 6:30 Central.
Quinter and Hoxie went one-two in the boys team standings at Saturday’s TMP Monarch Invitational in Hays. Quinter captured the team championship with 33 points, while Hoxie finished runner-up with 53. On the girls side, Hoxie placed third overall with 54 points.
A strong opening weekend for area college cross country teams. At the JK Gold Classic in Wichita, the 17th-ranked Fort Hays Tech Northwest women finished second overall with 75 points, trailing only Division I Wichita State, while the 24th-ranked Tiger men placed seventh. Meanwhile, the Colby Community College men finished sixth at the Cyclone Preview in Ames, competing against a strong field in their season-opening meet.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Kansas, Kansas State and Nebraska all opened their seasons with wins over the weekend. KU rolled past Long Island 51-6, as new starting quarterback Isaiah Marshall threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns. Kansas State opened the Collin Klein era with a 71-3 rout of Nicholls, with Avery Johnson accounting for four touchdowns and becoming K-State’s career leader in touchdown passes. And Nebraska pulled away from Ohio for a 49-21 win, as UNLV transfer Anthony Colandrea threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another, while freshman Jamal Rule rushed for 122 yards and three scores.
BASEBALL
The Royals came up just short Monday afternoon, falling to Arizona 5-4 in 10 innings at Kauffman Stadium. The Diamondbacks scored five times in the top of the 10th before Kansas City nearly answered, with Salvador Perez clearing the bases with a three-run double. Game two is tonight at 6:40 CT on KXXX.
The Rockies dropped two of three to St. Louis over the weekend at Coors Field and were officially eliminated from postseason contention. Colorado opens a series at the Yankees starting tonight.
