The countdown is officially on for one of the most anticipated restaurant openings in northwest Kansas.
Runza is preparing to open its doors next week in Colby at 615 W. Willow, bringing the famous Nebraska favorite to town as only the second Runza location in Kansas.
On Thursday, the Colby location hosted a private training event for its new staff, giving employees hands-on experience with the ordering systems, kitchen operations, and customer service ahead of opening day. NWKS Radio was invited to stop by for the training event and sample some of the menu items.
And let us just say… we enjoyed every bite.
For many in western Kansas, Runza has become a must-stop destination during trips into Nebraska. Known for its signature Runza sandwich, crinkle-cut fries, burgers, onion rings, and legendary ranch dressing, the restaurant has built a loyal following across the Midwest.
So what exactly is a Runza?
The original Runza sandwich is a warm bread pocket stuffed with seasoned ground beef, cabbage, onions, and spices. The recipe traces its roots back to Eastern European immigrants who brought the concept to Nebraska generations ago. Runza restaurants were founded in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1949 by Sally Everett, and the company has grown into a beloved regional brand with dozens of locations across Nebraska and surrounding states.

What makes Runza stand out is the combination of fresh ingredients, made-to-order food, and a menu that mixes classic comfort food with Midwest tradition. Along with the famous Original Runza Sandwich, customers can also find cheeseburgers, chicken sandwiches, salads, chili, wraps, and seasonal favorites. Their fries and homemade onion rings have developed almost as much of a fan base as the sandwiches themselves.
The Colby location has already created a buzz in the community, with many residents excited to finally have a Runza much closer to home instead of making the drive north.
While an exact grand opening day has not yet been officially announced, the restaurant is expected to open sometime in the middle of next week.
Safe to say, northwest Kansas is ready.
