Sheridan County launches Workforce Recruitment Incentive Program to attract new talent and boost local businesses

By Kerissa Payne, Economic Development Coordinator for Sheridan County

Hoxie, Kansas — May 9, 2025 — Sheridan County is excited to announce the official launch of the Sheridan County Recruitment Incentive Program, a new initiative aimed at attracting skilled workers and entrepreneurs to the region with financial incentives of up to $10,000 per recipient.

The program, made possible through a $60,000 grant from the Northwest Kansas Economic Innovation Center Inc., is designed to help fill critical positions in industries such as agriculture, education, healthcare, public service, and administration — as well as support new or relocating business professionals ready to put down roots in Sheridan County.

“Our local businesses are the heart of this community, and this program is a direct investment in their growth and sustainability,” said Payne. “With so many positions that are hard to fill, these funds can make the difference between an unfilled position and a business moving forward.”

Eligible businesses may apply for up to $10,000 per 12-month period, and the funding can be used toward new employee relocation assistance, sign-on bonuses, housing support, or other creative recruitment strategies. Priority will be given to full-time roles paying at least $15.50/hour or $32,500 annually, and all positions must be based in Sheridan County or employ individuals who intend to live within the neighboring counties.

The program also encourages participation from entrepreneurs and remote workers looking to relocate and invest in Sheridan County’s future.

The business should post any open position they are applying for on platforms like ConnectNWK.org and KansasWorks.com, and be the primary recruiter for each role. Once the application is approved, funds are distributed within 30 days and must be used within six months.

“This incentive isn’t just about hiring — it’s about adding to our strong, vibrant community,” Payne added. “We’re proud to offer support for both businesses and individuals who want to be part of Sheridan County’s next chapter.”
