The Sherman County Commissioners met on Monday, June 8th, and talked about multiple items, including a GAC update, a couple of budget requests, as well as a new water conservation program.
First was Commission business, which Evert said went pretty normal. One of the highlights from this part of the meeting includes honoring Greg Cure for serving 15 years on the hospital board. Evert had this to say about his incredible service.
"We had the privilege of honoring Greg Cure, who had provided 15 years of service to the county on the Hospital Board. That's quite an endeavor to do that much service to the community."
Along with that, they appointed Bill Biermann to the Hospital Board.
The next item on the agenda comes from Tess Smith with the Goodland Activity Center. She gave the commission an update regarding projects and the use of funding the GAC was provided. Right now, the plan is still to potentially add another gym to the GAC, upgrade the weight room, and continue to provide many opportunities to get people active.
The commission then heard two budget requests from Kanorado Cemetery and Dawn Gabee with Options. Options is a service for those who have suffered or are suffering from domestic and sexual abuse, so the funding of this program is very important.
Evert said great things about this program and what it means for the area.
"It's a great service provided in Northwest Kansas...they provide true options for what people can do."
An executive session was then held to discuss personnel, and while he can't talk directly about the discussions, he did want to mention that the county is always looking for more dispatchers. Evert mentioned how important dispatchers are in emergency situations.
Bernadette Mills with Tomorrow's Water Initiative also stopped in to talk to the commission. In short, the program provides funding to be able to open up basins or lagoons so that sitting water can reach the basins. Too much water is being left standing, so this initiative tries to get that water flowing again.
The last item on the agenda comes from Francis Schneider with Ram Hospitality. Ram Hospitality is a hotel on Highway 27, and they came to the commission to update them on project ideas, such as adding a truck stop. This would allow more truckers to stop and have a place to stay and relax.
The next meeting for the Sherman County Commissioners will be Tuesday, June 30th beginning at 8 am.
