Burlington, Colorado
Sonja Sue Holmes, of Burlington, Colorado, passed away on October 7, 2026, in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado, after a lengthy battle with dementia.
Sue was born on April 27, 1951, to Ortis and Maxine Andrews in Burlington, the third of four children. She attended and graduated from Burlington High School with the class of 1969. Following graduation, she attended Americana Beauty College to study cosmetology in Denver, Colorado. She began working for a few local stylists, then the salon at the Ramada Inn, where she would later be joined by Mary, planting the seeds of longtime friendship and business partnership. They would go on to open The Hair Affair, which operated until her retirement. She loved her work and listening to the stories of her clients, from which her sons would learn that they would not be able to get away with anything for long.
On January 26, 1971, Sue married Dwight Holmes in Butte, Montana. Corey was born in 1971, Brad in 1975 - the same year they moved into their forever home on Pomeroy Street - and Cody rounded out the family in 1979. She gained the daughters she always wanted when her sons married, and she loved each of them dearly. The role which brought her the greatest joy began in 1993, when Riley arrived and she became Grandma. Nine more grandchildren followed, and she doted on each one of them. She had endless time for all of her grandchildren, as well as a way of making every one of them feel special. Her grandchildren were the highlight of her Christmases and other family gatherings.
She loved the water, snow skiing, painting, playing cards, puzzles, dancing, and singing. She took great pride in her flower garden, tending to it with an exacting eye and an attention to detail that left little overlooked. Her yard reflected her patience, dedication and desire to see things done just right. That attention to detail carried into other parts of her life, especially at Christmastime, her favorite season. She had her own way of doing things, putting great care into the traditions she cherished and the details that made the holiday special, especially for her grandchildren. It seemed that with each grandchild came the addition of a Christmas tree. Above all, she took pride in creating beauty to share with the people she loved.
Sue is survived by her husband of 55 years, Dwight; her sons, Corey (Lori), Brad (Catherine), and Cody; her grandchildren, Riley, Sydnee, Allison (Jacob), Taylor, Lexi, DeVonte, Traevon (Hannah), Trinitee, Rayvonn, and Angelina; her siblings, Sandra (Ron), Jerry (Becki), and Bud (Mary); her brother-in-law, Les (Maureen); many nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ortis and Maxine Andrews.
A church service will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, October 12, at First Christian Church in Burlington, followed by a graveside service at Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The First Christian Church of Burlington.
Memorial contributions may be made out to the First Christian Church and may be left at the services or mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave., Goodland, KS 67735.
