Something big, bright, and internationally famous is making its way down I-70 — and it’s stopping right here in Colby. For the first time ever, the FIFA World Cup Countdown Clock will be on display in Colby from December 3–7, giving northwest Kansas a rare chance to be part of the world’s biggest sporting event.
🌍 First, What Is FIFA?
FIFA is short for the Fédération Internationale de Football Association — the global organization that governs international soccer. It oversees the sport worldwide and organizes major tournaments, including the legendary FIFA World Cup, held every four years.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the largest in history:
48 teams
104 matches
Hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico
Kansas City will host six matches, making it a major World Cup destination
With millions of fans watching worldwide, the 2026 World Cup is expected to bring massive tourism, global media attention, and a historic celebration of soccer across North America.
🕒 Now… What’s the FIFA Clock?
The FIFA Countdown Clock is a huge, eye-catching piece of World Cup promotion — 10 feet tall, 450 pounds, fully illuminated, and built to withstand the elements. It’s currently traveling to communities across Kansas as part of a statewide tour promoting Kansas City’s role as a World Cup host city.
And for four days, Colby gets to host it.
The clock proudly displays Kansas City at the base and continuously counts down to the opening of the 2026 World Cup. It has already visited Dodge City, Hutchinson, and Wichita before making the trip back toward Kansas City — with Colby as its next major stop.
📍 Colby’s Big Moment
The Colby Convention & Visitors Bureau, led by Executive Director Carson McLaughlin-Carson, is thrilled to bring this once-in-a-lifetime display to town. Because the Visitors Center is cozy in size, the clock will be showcased outdoors, fully lit and ready for photos.
Carson shared a few key highlights:
The clock is massive — absolutely a must-see in person.
It lights up and makes for a great day or night photo-op.
It’s expected to draw travelers off I-70.
After Colby, the clock will continue east with a planned stop in Hays.
Kansas City is officially known as the “Soccer Capital of America,” making this clock even more exciting for Kansas communities.
📸 A Perfect Photo Opportunity
Residents, visitors, soccer fans, and anyone who loves rare attractions are encouraged to stop by and grab a selfie, family photo, or video. The Visitors Bureau will also be creating content throughout the week.
