The Rockies’ losing streak reached a season-high seven games Monday night with a 13-3 loss at Washington. Colorado actually led 2-0 behind home runs from Willi Castro and Ezequiel Tovar before the Nationals erupted for five runs in the fifth. Ryan Feltner allowed seven runs, five earned, while Tovar left the game with a strained left wrist. Colorado will try to snap the skid Tuesday night in Washington.

The Royals take an eight-game winning streak north of the border Tuesday as they open a three-game series against Toronto. Kansas City is coming off a perfect seven-game homestand and will send Seth Lugo to the mound in the opener against veteran Max Scherzer.  First pitch from the Rogers Centre is at 

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders says an ongoing legal matter won’t be a distraction as the Buffaloes prepare for the season. Sanders has been subpoenaed to testify in a civil case involving his son, Shedeur Sanders, but says his focus remains on football and getting Colorado ready for its opener. Sanders is entering his fourth season in Boulder, with the Buffaloes looking to bounce back after a 3-and-9 campaign last year. 

Kansas linebacker Trey Lathan continues to earn preseason national recognition. The senior has been named to the Bednarik Award watch list, given annually to the top defensive player in college football. Lathan led the Jayhawks with 86 tackles last season, adding seven tackles for loss and earning Honorable Mention All-Big 12 honors. It’s his second preseason watch list after also being named a candidate for the Butkus Award. 

The Chiefs have wrapped up training camp in St. Joseph, and one of the biggest takeaways is that Patrick Mahomes looks like himself again. Mahomes was a full participant throughout camp following offseason knee rehab and showed his usual mobility and ability to make throws on the run.  Kansas City is also expected to look different offensively, with newcomer Kenneth Walker the Third emerging as a potential workhorse and the Chiefs using more under-center formations and emphasizing the running game.  The rookie class has also impressed, including receiver Cyrus Allen, while the revamped defensive front could become one of the strengths of the team.
