The Colby Eagles softball team delivered a dominant doubleheader performance on April 1, at home, sweeping the Goodland Cowgirls with decisive 12-2 and 10-0 victories. Fueled by explosive offense and solid pitching, the Eagles proved unstoppable in both matchups.
Jalyssa Sabatka led the charge in Game 1, going 3-for-3 at the plate and driving in four runs. Her two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the first gave Colby an early lead, and she added a two-run single in the fourth to cap off a massive inning for the Eagles.
Colby struck early after Goodland scored in the top of the first on an error. Sabatka’s homer quickly erased the deficit, putting Colby ahead 2-1. The Eagles added two more in the second inning when Maddie McCarty sent a home run to center field.
In the third, Madison Hull doubled to extend the lead to 5-1. Then came the explosive fourth inning, where Colby plated seven runs. A passed ball brought in one, Briley Kleinsorge doubled home another, and Morgan Hills added an RBI triple. The highlight came from Hailey Bolyard, who crushed a two-run homer to left field.
Ryler Carter earned the win in the circle for Colby, allowing just three hits and no earned runs over five innings. She struck out three and walked two. Colby amassed 13 hits in total, with Carter, McCarty, and Hills each recording multiple hits. The Eagles also turned a double play on defense.
Colby didn’t let up in the second game, cruising to a 10-0 shutout win. Sadie Cheney got the scoring started with an RBI groundout in the first inning, and the Eagles never looked back. In the third, Colby extended their lead with help from a Goodland error, followed by a Cheney RBI single, a sacrifice fly from Kleinsorge, and a two-out RBI double down the line by Bolyard.
The Eagles closed out the game with a five-run fifth inning. Madison Hull’s fielder’s choice plated one, Kenlie Miller added an RBI single, McCarty doubled in two runs, and Carter added one more with a single.
Carter was dominant on the mound once again, tossing a complete-game shutout. She gave up just four hits over five innings, striking out eight and walking only one. Offensively, Cheney and McCarty each tallied two hits and two RBIs. Colby collected nine hits as a team, continuing their impressive offensive output.
The Eagles will look to keep the momentum going as they head to Russell for their next matchup on Friday, April 4.
