Goodland Cowgirls Ready for 2026 Volleyball Season

GOODLAND, Kan. — The Goodland Cowgirls enter the 2026 volleyball season with a new-look lineup but high expectations.
Goodland must replace a large senior class from last season, with seniors Hayden Short and Karen Moreno among those stepping into leadership roles.
“I’ve tried to be a leader every year I’ve been on the court for Goodland,” Short said. “I feel like I’ve done a good job of building up to where I’m at now.”
The Cowgirls spent the summer developing their new lineup, competing in Garden City before attending a three-day team camp at the University of Kansas. Coach Angie Brumbaugh said those opportunities helped Goodland build chemistry and identify how its new pieces fit together.
Goodland returns four starters in Short, Moreno, McKenna Schick and Avery Wiebel. Landry Isbell, Malia Shinette, Dani Fisher and Landon VonLintel are among the players expected to take on larger roles.
The Cowgirls will run a 6-2 offense with Short and Chinn handling setting duties. Short has set a goal of reaching 1,000 career assists, while Shinette continues to develop after receiving increased work at setter during the summer.
Moreno believes communication and serve receive can be strengths for a team that may not have as much overall size as Goodland has featured in recent seasons.
“I think we all communicate so well on the court,” Moreno said. “I think our serve receive is also really good.”
Goodland enters the season with its sights set on a Great West Activities Conference championship and another postseason run.
“I think the sky’s the limit right now,” Brumbaugh said. “I feel like we have a really good group.”
Goodland is expected to remain in Class 3A, and Brumbaugh believes the Cowgirls have the potential to make a run at the state tournament.
Cowgirls open the 2026 season hosting St. Francis on September 1st.
