Goodland girls golf put together a strong showing at its home invitational Tuesday at Sugar Hills, finishing third with a team score of 415, just three shots behind champion Thomas More Prep. Natalie Cure led the Cowgirls with an 87 to finish runner-up individually, while Sadie Sederstrom tied for third with a 93. TMP’s Brynn Schoepf earned top medalist honors with an 84, while Syracuse finished second as a team, just one shot behind TMP. Colby placed 5th in the final team standings, led by Cora Degood, who tied for 5th with Rawlins County’s Addison Schilde. 

Wallace County Tri: DCHS swept the host Wildcats & Rawlins County.  Wallace County took the other match over the Lady Buffs in straight sets. 

Oakley was swept by P-Burg & Hoxie while the Lady Indians lost in three to Phillipsburg. 

Goodland went 1-1 at the Scott City Tri: Cowgirls were swept by Ulysses but beat Scott City in three in the nightcap. 

Wheatland-Grinnell Tri: Quinter beat Wheatland-Grinnell 2–1, with set scores 22–25, 25–23, 25–21. Quinter also swept Palco 2–0. 

A top-20 showdown is set for tonight in Colby as 16th-ranked Colby Community College hosts number-10 Barton. The Trojans are 7-and-3 and 2-and-0 in conference play after winning three of their last four, all in straight sets. All three meetings last season went five sets, including Barton’s win in the Plains District championship. First serve is at 6:30 from the Colby Event Center.

BASEBALL

The Royals battled back twice but ultimately fell to Arizona 5-3 in 11 innings Tuesday night. Kansas City trailed 2-0 in the ninth before John Rave blasted a game-tying two-run homer with two outs. The Royals tied it again in the 10th, but Arizona scored twice in the 11th and Kansas City couldn’t answer. Michael Wacha was outstanding, throwing six scoreless innings, but the Royals have now dropped the first two games of the series.  SEries concludes tonight at 640 CT on KXXX.

The Rockies fell to the Yankees 5-3 Tuesday night in New York. Adael Amador homered early for Colorado, while Hunter Goodman belted his 37th homer with a two-run shot in the ninth. Former Rockie Ryan McMahon delivered the go-ahead double for New York in his first game against Colorado since being traded to the Yankees last year. Gabriel Hughes took the loss as the Rockies dropped the series opener.

Patrick Mahomes is expected to be back under center Monday night when the Chiefs open the season against Denver. Andy Reid says there’s a “pretty good chance” Mahomes starts after December surgery to repair a torn ACL and LCL. Mahomes hasn’t missed a practice since being cleared in late July. The concern is at left tackle, where Josh Simmons is unlikely to play, potentially leaving undrafted rookie Kahlil Benson protecting Mahomes’ blind side.
