Sekavec Named to Who's Who for Second Time

COLBY, Kan. — Colby Community College faculty member Dr. Jeffrey Sekavec has been named to Marquis Who’s Who in America for 2025, earning the distinction for the second consecutive year after also being recognized in 2024.

Marquis Who’s Who selects individuals based on professional achievements, leadership and contributions within their fields, considering factors such as position, accomplishments and professional visibility.

Sekavec has served on the Colby Community College faculty since 2017 and currently chairs and coordinates the college’s emergency response team, a position he has held since 2018. He was named chair of the STEM division for science programs in 2022. His association with the college began in 2006 when he worked as an assistant chemistry instructor alongside the late Dr. Max Pickerill. He later returned to the institution after serving as a chemistry instructor and adjunct faculty member from 2012 to 2014. His academic focus includes biology, microbiology and antibiotic resistance.

In addition to teaching, Sekavec works with select government agencies on preparedness efforts related to biological threats and has served since 2014 as a consultant on bioterrorism, biological incident management, and training.

His research has been published in professional journals addressing antimicrobial agents and antibiotic resistance, and he has conducted studies related to disaster response, first responder operations and leadership in law enforcement.

Before returning to Colby, Sekavec worked as a graduate teaching and research assistant at Fort Hays State University from 2010 to 2013 and served as laboratory manager for the university’s Western Kansas Center for Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. He also previously worked as a communications and training officer for the Oakley Police Department.

A U.S. Air Force veteran, Sekavec served from 1999 to 2002. He earned an associate degree in chemistry from Colby Community College, a bachelor’s degree in biology from Bethany College and a master’s degree in microbiology from Fort Hays State University. He also holds a Doctor of Management in homeland security from Colorado Technical University. In 2025, he completed the Harvard Medical School Senior Life Sciences Leaders Program.

Sekavec said he is honored by the recognition and remains committed to advancing student learning, scientific research and community preparedness through his work at Colby Community College.
