Sherman County Releases Statement Following Large Law Enforcement Search

SHERMAN COUNTY, Kan. - A large law enforcement response in eastern Sherman County Tuesday began after multiple suspects fled an attempted traffic stop on Interstate 70 near Sherman County Road 26.

NWKS Radio followed the developing situation throughout the day as authorities searched the area near I-70 mile marker 24. Early information from law enforcement indicated nine suspects fled on foot in both the north and south directions. Residents were urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious people or vehicles.

Late Tuesday evening, authorities reported that three suspects had been taken into custody for questioning while the search continued for the remaining individuals.

On July 21, 2026, the Sherman County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to assist the Kansas Highway Patrol in the search of multiple individuals that fled a routine traffic stop. Multiple Sheriff’s Office personnel and surrounding agencies responded.

Thanks to the efforts of all involved, three individuals were detained for questioning. At the direction of the Kansas Highway Patrol, the search for the remaining individuals was discontinued at approximately 11:00 p.m. Sherman County Sheriff’s Office personnel continued to monitor the area throughout the night.

The remaining individuals are not believed to pose any threat to the public and have likely left the area. However, deputies will continue to monitor the area.

The Sherman County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend its appreciation and gratitude to the Goodland Police Department, Thomas County Sheriff’s Office, Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, Sherman County EMS, Sherman County Emergency Management, various community members and businesses, and the Kansas Highway Patrol.
