In today’s fast-paced world, community spaces often serve as the heartbeat of local connection and recreation. Recently, a group of spirited community members decided to reinvigorate our local pickleball courts, Colby High School seniors Jalyssa Sabatka,

Natalie Wederski, and juniors Shaylee Holzmeister and Brittany Schwartz were representing the Thomas County Community Foundation as their youth ambassadors.

Instead of presenting a generic check, the students set out to create a lasting impact by purchasing a wide variety of pickleball supplies. Their goal was simple: give the community something they could hold, use, and enjoy. Bright colored balls, pastel-toned alternatives, and even rackets featuring playful pickle designs were carefully chosen to bring a fun, vibrant touch to the courts. Holzmeister explained, the idea was to provide something “that they can store and whatever they need, just pull it out a lot easier for them.” This approach not only makes the donation more memorable but also ensures that the equipment is readily available for everyone to use.

Pickleball has become a beloved pastime for many, especially the youth, who have all tried the game at least once. The donated supplies are set to do more than just facilitate a game—they’re designed to build community. Imagine a space where neighbors gather not only to compete but also to chat, relax, and create memories together. Whether it’s a spirited match or a casual conversation on the sidelines, the revitalized courts promise to be a hub for connection and joy.

There’s something uniquely powerful about giving a gift that people can see and touch. While checks are important, they can often feel abstract. By choosing to donate physical items, the team made a deliberate choice to make their contribution both meaningful and lasting. The excitement of picking out the equipment was infectious, and it resonated with everyone involved. It wasn’t just about the game—it was about sparking enthusiasm and pride in a shared space.

This initiative is a reminder that community is built one tangible act at a time. It encourages everyone to think creatively about how we can contribute to our local spaces. Whether you’re donating sports equipment, volunteering your time, or simply spreading the word about community events, every effort counts.

So next time you pass by the pickleball courts, take a moment to appreciate not just the game, but the collective spirit of community and the simple, tangible acts of kindness that bring us together.
