Colby Lady Eagles Clinch GWAC Title After Forfeit, Celebrate Seniors with Dodgeball Showdown

by Derek White

The Colby High School Lady Eagles softball team wrapped up their regular season in unconventional fashion this week, claiming the Great West Activities Conference (GWAC) title with a 6-2 league record, without taking the field.

Originally scheduled for their final home game and Senior Night, the Lady Eagles found themselves without an opponent after Holcomb forfeited its final two contests. The abrupt cancellation meant no on-field finale for the seniors, but handed Colby the conference crown.

With quick thinking and creativity, head coach Tucker Branham and his staff transformed the night into a memorable celebration. In place of the canceled softball game, a five-inning dodgeball match was held, pitting seniors and teammates against their own parents.

What started as a lighthearted substitute quickly turned into a fierce competition. The parents surged ahead early with a commanding 5-0 lead after the first inning, drawing cheers and laughter from the crowd. The students responded in the second with a run of their own, cutting the lead to 5-1.

By the end of the third inning, the parents extended their advantage to 6-1. But the tide shifted dramatically in the fourth and fifth, as the students mounted an energetic comeback, tying the score and forcing the match into extra innings.

Ultimately, it was the parents who prevailed, eking out an 8-7 victory in the seventh inning with a clutch performance that sealed the deal.

Following the spirited contest, attention turned to honoring the Lady Eagles' seniors. With parents by their sides, each senior was recognized for their contributions to the program, capping off a heartfelt and festive evening.

The Lady Eagles now turn their focus to the postseason. Colby will travel to Goodland on Monday, May 19, to begin regional tournament play with hopes of extending their strong season.

Despite the absence of a final game, the Lady Eagles’ night was filled with celebration, competition, and a fitting tribute to the Class of 2025.
