COLBY, Kan. (August 28, 2025) — Former professional football player turned educator, entrepreneur, and NFL agent Ron Freeman will be the featured speaker in the Dr. Max Pickerill Lecture Series at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9, in the H.F. Davis Memorial Library at Colby Community College.

Just three months after a tornado ripped through Grinnell, Kansas, the heart of the town was beating strong again Friday night as the Gove County Community Foundation hosted the After the Storm Revival & Street Concert featuring Kansas native Logan Mize.

The banks of Atwood Lake were filled with music, worship, and community spirit last night as an estimated 800 to 1,000 people gathered for the annual *Worship by the Water* concert. With chairs and blankets spread across the lawn near the lake’s gazebo and bandshell, the setting could not have been more perfect-still, calm, and bathed in a late summer glow. Downtown Colby was buzzing this past weekend as the Sunflower Festival lit up Fike Park for not just one-but two days of food, music, games, and community fun. What started back in 2018 as a small grassroots idea has now grown into one of Colby’s favorite end-of-summer traditions, and this year’s expanded schedule proved that bigger really can be better.

Downtown Colby will be buzzing with activity this weekend as the annual Sunflower Festival takes over Fike Park on Friday, August 22, and Saturday, August 23. Rock the Plains 2024 brought Texas Country and Red Dirt music back to Tuttle Creek Park in Manhattan, KS, August 8–9.
